Irene's story

I was diagnosed with a brain tumour 12 months ago. I was really upset initially, mainly for my kids but I worked my way through it. I made the decision not to have treatment as I had a friend who was very poorly with their treatment, and I didn’t want that for myself. I am 76 years old now and I still feel like myself even at the end.
I started coming to Dove House for their Living Well group and then I started coming to Friday Friends. I come for the company, and we do lots of different things like crafts and activities, they make me happy.

I struggle with my speech due to my condition and sometimes I get embarrassed. It used to stop me from going out, but I really enjoy coming to Friday Friends. My son or neighbours bring me each week as I like to come every time. If not, I have carers at home, and they help me get out and about.

The volunteers are great at the hospice. My left arm is weak, and they help me when I can’t do anything, so do all the lovely friends I have made at Friday Friends. We have built a little community here which is wonderful.

Coming to Friday Friends gets me out of the house, it makes me happy to come to the group each week. Don’t be worried about coming, it is fun, but you will see that for yourself when you are here.
I even do crafts at home now because of the group which I never used to before. I have taken to painting and restoring garden gnomes which I am enjoying.
